BIG CHEESE on the Art Museum
“The
Philadelphia Museum of Art is more than just Philadelphia’s
grandest and greatest museum. It is one of the great museums
of the world, a Greek
Revival palace rising majestically above the Schuylkill River,
and – with its famed ‘Rocky’ stairs – the
glorious endpoint to the city’s splendid Parkway. After
a several-year exile outside the Wachovia Spectrum, the ‘Rocky’ statue
stands once again in front of the Art Museum, but this time
at ground level. Evidently the Museum decided that a movie
prop has no place among its vast collection of ‘real’ art.
While I don’t like seeing Rocky dissed, I have to admit
that the collection of ‘real’ art really is vast,
and the galleries really are breathtaking. There is nothing
about the Art Museum that isn’t first-rate. Even the
Museum Restaurant gets high ratings from Zagat’s.”
