Built
in the late 19th Century as a summer destination for wealthy
railroad barons and
their families, Atlantic City is perhaps
the best known seashore resort in the US. The city that gave
us the famed Boardwalk – not
to mention the Miss America pageant, the White
House Sub Shop and salt water taffy – has
undergone dramatic changes through the years. The heyday of Steel
Pier, Million Dollar Pier, Steeplechase Pier and the Planters
Nut Factory is long gone. Glitzy casino hotels now dominate the
skyline. At least you can still travel from casino to casino
using Atlantic City’s traditional modes of transportation – rolling
chairs (on the Boardwalk) and jitneys.
MONOPOLY
fans know that the game’s streets
and other colored properties can all still be found in Atlantic
City – except of course for Marvin Gardens (correctly spelled “Marven
Gardens”), a planned community of charming old homes located
on the border of Atlantic City’s neighbors to the south,
MARgate and VENtnor.

SON
OF SWOOP: “One morning I woke up underneath Lucy,
the giant old elephant structure just off the beach in
Margate. Freaked me out. How I ended up there I’ll
never know. All I remember from the night before is having
an undetermined number of drinks and going on a hot streak
at the Borgata crap table.”
