Kevin Bacon is the only Philadelphia celebrity
who can accurately say he is both the son of a Philadelphia celebrity
and immortalized in a trivia game.
The elder Philadelphia celebrity
was Kevin’s dad Edmund
Bacon, the superstar architect and urban planner who headed Philadelphia’s
City Planning Commission for more than 20 years and helped create
(among other places) Independence Mall, Society Hill, Penn Center,
and Penn’s Landing.
The trivia game is Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, in which, using
film roles, players try to link any named actor to Kevin Bacon
in the fewest possible number of steps. (The game is based on the
1990 play Six Degrees of Separation, which popularized the idea
that anyone in the world can be linked to anyone else in the world
through a chain of 6 or fewer acquaintances.)
Kevin got his formal acting training
as a teenager and, after a few brief off-Broadway and soap opera
appearances,
made his movie
debut in 1977 as Omega pledge Chip in Animal House (“Thank
you Sir! May I have another?”). Kevin’s film career
really took off in the 1980s and 1990s, with prominent roles in
such movies as Diner, JFK, A Few Good Men, Apollo
13, The River
Wild, and of course Footloose.
The youngest of 6 children (Six Degrees of Edmund Bacon?), Kevin
is a true family man and has been happily married to lovely actress
Kyra Sedgwick since 1988.
Since 1994, Kevin and his
brother Michael have performed (and recorded several outstanding
albums) as the R&B
band The Bacon Brothers – making Michael the only celebrity
who can accurately say he is both the son of a Philadelphia celebrity
and the brother of a Philadelphia celebrity immortalized in a trivia
game.
