Philadelphia has over 2,700
outdoor murals – more
than any other city in the world.
The city’s Mural
Arts Program (“MAP”)
began in 1984 as part of larger effort
to address neighborhood
blight and eliminate graffiti, and actually provided formal art
training to graffiti artists. Instead of defacing the city, they
beautified it.
MAP now employs more than 300 artists each year, and partners
with local community leaders, associations, schools, businesses
and agencies to plan and execute meaningful mural projects.
The examples shown here are but a small fraction of what awaits
when you decide to explore the city in search of fine outdoor art
(and cheese steaks).
