The
AHL’s Philadelphia
Phantoms (a/k/a “The Philadelphia Sports
Team that Actually Wins Championships”) put the 2007
hockey off-season to good use. Team PR gurus Mike Thornton
and Brian Smith traveled the
Delaware Valley’s highways, byways and alleyways “on
a vital quest to find Philadelphia’s best cheesesteak.”
With
each new cheese steak venue they visited, Mike and Brian took
along a “guest critic” selected from the ranks
of pro athletes, local media personalities, and fellow Comcast-Spectacor
employees. These included Flyer legends Bill Clement and Paul
Holmgren, Phantoms/Flyers coach John Stevens and left wing Riley
Cote, and 300-pound Philadelphia Soul lineman Bryan Save.
The rules were simple:
-
Mike would order his steak with American cheese and grilled
onions (“American cheese wit’”) and focus on
roll quality.
-
Brian would order “American cheese wit’” but
add mushrooms and ketchup, and focus on toppings and condiments.
- The Guest Critic could order any style sandwich, cheese,
toppings, condiments, etc. he pleased.
-
Each critic would rate his cheese steak on a scale of 1 to
5 Golden Hockey Sticks. The rating would be based on sandwich
quality only – not service, ambience or wall photos.
If
it’s an 18-inch steak, it must be Leo’s! |
Mike
and Brian picked some good venues -- most are on CST’s
Best Steaks list. And the winner?
Chink’s Steaks,
which earned a perfect 5 Golden Hockey Sticks from all three
critics,
for a total of 15 Golden Hockey Sticks.
Here
is the Top Ten list:
Chink’s 15.0 Golden
Hockey Sticks
John’s Roast Pork 14.0 Golden Hockey Sticks
Steaks on South 13.5 Golden Hockey Sticks
Dalessandro’s 13.0 Golden Hockey Sticks
